If it hadn't been for James Hancock's excellent 'Wrong Reel' podcast and, particularly, the guys from The Pink Smoke website's episode about swashbucklers, I would probably never have heard of this unfairly forgotten little gem. He's there to find the locations of the island's guns and sabotage them so that Her Majesty's Navy can swoop in and apprehend/annihilate the bloodthirsty buggers. But while there he finds himself clashing with and falling for a badass pirate maiden named Spitfire Stevens played by Maureen O'Hara. Flynn and O'Hara seem to enjoy their roles, and O'Hara is characteristically intense even though the role could easily have been phoned in. It's a slight story, kinda stupid one, really, but there's some fun to be had here, and the setting has hints of flavor to it (it's a place ruled by pirates! Do more with it.).
But it's definitely stuck in the prevailing values of its time, and the strong female pirate lead (O'Hara, duh) seems to be intentionally weakened in the presence of Flynn in an unfortunate way. December count: 27/100 •.
This is a tremendously enjoyable film. It starts out with Errol Flynn being whipped, his cover story so he will be accepted by the pirates. Fortunately, rather than taking us into a glum Cold War allegory, 'Against All Flags' turns out to hark back not just to the swashbuckler but also the Arabian Nights films Universal made in the Forties. There is plenty of action and skullduggery, but also wit here. There is real chemistry between Flynn and Maureen O'Hara, and their scenes together are delightful. The film also has fun with Flynn's Hollywood wolf reputation. No, this isn't a great swashbuckler like 'Captain Blood' or 'The Crimson Pirate,' but it is a great deal of fun.
